#RowhamIINo104 #RowhamIINo100 #RowhamIINo101 I feel like people are very all or nothing with this idea. The original post was saying something more along the lines of that there isn’t a main DCR event that’s hyped up and trained for the way Oxbridge do for bumps. It’s true that while the two very well run Nov events have a lot of weight and meaning behind them, the only serious DCR senior event is very early in the year. This often lowers chances of freshers rowing in them for multiple reasons and while a fun event, does not take advantage of the long course which is what the Durham rowing scene is known for. Also there is almost certainly a play on the bumps formula that could be run. Four days, over the long course and a no bumping course between new and old Elvet Bridges. Have boats start at DARC gate, 2 lengths apart but diss allow clashes. The Bumping element could essentially be overtaking the same as in any head race and the finish order used for next days start order. With an open mind something could definitely be done. Instead of seeing it as a watered down bumps why not work from the standard head race and try to make that more exciting?

#RowhamIINo101 #RowhamIINo100 Once you engage more than 4 braincells, it becomes quite clear that bumps wouldn’t work in Durham. Non-contact wouldn’t work because the majority of the damage comes with pulling over, not the bumps themselves. Ontop of this, our stretch of river is simply too short. It would be great if we could do it but there are a multitude of reasons why we can’t (and unsurprisingly this isn’t the first year (nor will it be the last) that it has been suggested)

#RowhamIINo100 #RowhamIINo99 Durham bumps would be the coolest thing imaginable - and I have heard from alumni that something of that sort used to happen in the 70s Could definitely be done non-contact as happens for Oxford City bumps and (I think) at Eton and Shrewsbury DCR get your act together and organise this before a load of us graduate!

#RowhamIINo99 Jokes aside I think DCR do a great job as an administration to run the college rowing scene. However I do wish there were more DCR run events. We don’t have the ‘definitive event’ like Oxbridge do with bumps. College Fours at Durham Regatta is about the closest we get to a unique event, although sadly is often a straight final on the women’s side and only contested by the top colleges on the men’s side (Collingwood, Trevs, Hatfield HB and Johns last year). The only thing that makes it special is the entry criteria and the long course (which is also used in other events). At the moment the colleges basically act as medium level uni rowing teams, and race all the same events. I know it’s a lot easier said then done but maybe over the next few years those moving into DCR exec positions could try make a new event? Senate Head used to be a thing. Bumps is probably out the question, but a non contact variation over the long course in fours? Or even a BUCS style regatta on the wear, With it open only to colleges and multiple boat classes competing for a VL. This would also encourage more colleges to run sculling (Collingwood, Trevs, Butler , Grey, HB -“are the only ones which can put out a quad I think. And only HB actually own a 4x/-). All shower thoughts but that’s where best things start!

#RowhamIINo98 #RowhamIINo96 "You've got to love the process, not just the result" - what a beautiful viewpoint: so true, and I feel that's why I and I'm sure many others get up early and go through the hard ergs and the cold and wet trailerings 💜

#RowhamIINo96 Just some food for thought for the people on here dunking on Collingwood, Trevs or Cuths for training a lot for the results they get: (For the record, I’m not from any of those three, I just think this is kinda pertinent) Yeah, the top colleges train a lot. Don’t know about the 14 sessions a week rumour that’s been going around, but I know the Cuths 1V worked hard this season. It’s why they’ve improved. Since when did working hard become something to make fun of? So they had a tough result at HoRR, does that mean all the training they did this year has been meaningless? Obviously not. And I’ll tell you why. (Again, sorry to produce a TED talk, just think this is important) I was told this by an old coach, and it stuck with me: you’ve got to love the process, not just the result. Most of the petty bickering and snide commentary directed at the top three colleges, I can only assume, comes from a few rowers in the other colleges, jealous and resentful that they can’t turn out the same results, and so make little of what Collingwood, Cuths and Trevs manage to achieve. But they’re kind of missing the point. Those crews do well because they enjoy the process - the training, the ergs, the effort it takes to be able to row well as a crew. Obviously the results matter, but the training itself is more than just a means to an end. So, if you want to be improve, or even just enjoy the sport - stop ridiculing other crews for their results, and start focussing on your own process. Eyes in the boat, people.
