Rhodes Confessions 2024

My biggest mistake was choosing Rhodes (subjective).
As someone who wanted to experience some of the best years of my life in university, Rhodes simply did not do that for me. The institution itself is small, and thereās practically nothing for student to do and I say this as someone who has lived here for four years. The SRC is not for students SRC but basically an extension of the university and has become a popularity contest. Thereās no water, terrible infrastructure and the residences are so far from some of the lecture venues so getting back to and from dining halls to make the next class was absolutely frustrating. There is a shopping centre which somehow is a mall that basically offers nothing interesting. I believe McDonalds just opened up BUT either than that and the thousands of high priced coffee shops will learn to accept a life of KFC, Hungry Lion, Steers and Debonairs. For drinks thereās probably 5 establishments in the whole town that are actually good but again expect tavern vibes. The roads are damaged, and full of cow dung, street kids and burst pipes.
The only two things, I canāt fault is the education and the team at the Student Bureau. Honestly, you will learn if youāre determined and pass well and the assistance with registration from the SB is good if youāre FUNDED properly.
Remember, NSFAS will leave you in debt if youāre on campus residences. They also only pay you R305 as a monthly allowance if youāre on campus residences. They pay R5500 to off campus students but rent is probably going to take R4000 so R1500 for electricity, food, water, WiFi and anything else.
All in all, the place sucks, you might make GREAT friends but trust me YOU WILL REGRET MOVING HERE. If you love life, and do not want to hate yourself, DO NOT COME.
